Europe’s largest pressure chamber system at Pasteur II Hospital in Nice

With the successful commissioning of the new HAUX-STARMED-QUADRO 3000-2200/3.3/SC4 +6.6/SC2 pressure chamber system at Pasteur II Hospital in Nice, HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT is setting a new standard in hyperbaric medicine. The project, which was launched in June 2022, was completed in August 2025 after an intensive planning and manufacturing phase.

Technical specifications

The new pressure chamber system consists of a HAUX-QUADRO system with three main chambers and three antechambers. The entire system weighs almost 200 tonnes. It is one of the most technologically advanced and largest systems ever built.

The chambers are structured as follows:

  • Chamber 1: 7 persons in the main chamber, 3 persons in the antechamber
  • Chamber 2: 13 persons in the main chamber, 3 persons in the antechamber
  • Chamber 3: 13 persons in the main chamber, 2 persons in the antechamber

A total of 41 people can use the chambers at the same time, 30 of whom can receive treatment simultaneously – an outstanding figure by international standards.

One chamber, including its antechamber, is designed for an operating pressure of up to 5.6 bar overpressure, enabling the treatment of severe diving accidents. The other chambers operate at a pressure of up to 3.3 bar, qualifying them for a wide range of applications in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

Innovative solutions for safety, comfort and flexibility

The system offers numerous customised adaptations and comfort features. These include:

  • A comprehensive patient entertainment system with network connection
  • Space for up to 8 patient beds
  • Three customer-specific gases that can be selected individually at each treatment station
  • Screw-on airlock modules that enable flexible transfers during ongoing operation

Another technical highlight: the chambers were designed to be modular and dismantled into individual sections for transport and installation – a logistical challenge that was only made possible through close cooperation between all project participants.

Medical integration and strategic importance

The new system will be part of the emergency room at Pasteur II Hospital. In addition to standard HBOT care, the system’s high-pressure range offers ideal conditions for the treatment of decompression sickness and serious diving accidents.

The system will also be used for research and testing purposes – a clear commitment by the hospital to the scientific advancement of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Compared to the previous on-site facility, the new solution offers significantly more space, increased patient comfort and greater treatment flexibility.

Complex installation of the chamber system in the hospital

The installation of the chamber system presented a particular challenge. Due to the structural infrastructure of the hospital, conventional delivery was not possible.

The chambers were therefore transported to the site by crane. A special transport vehicle then took over the further transport along a narrow, ascending path to the final position on the building. In addition to a transport company, four other partners were involved in this logistical masterpiece.

The impressive installation and the technical significance of the project were also covered by the media. A regional French television station reported on the new pressure chamber system in a short feature.

Development and project coordination from a single source

HAUX-LIFE-SUPPORT was responsible for the entire project, from initial planning and manufacturing to commissioning and acceptance by the customer. The dimensions of the system and the complex installation required precise and interdisciplinary project management. The successful completion of this project demonstrates that complex challenges can be overcome through professional planning, innovative technology and close cooperation.
